Flood Watch Number: 2
FLOODING EXPECTED IN PARTS OF THE SOUTHERN GULF OF CARPENTARIA
CATCHMENTS FROM THURSDAY
The monsoon trough lies through the Gulf of Carpentaria and
western Cape York Peninsula and will deepen over coming days. A
tropical low situated in the western Gulf on Wednesday is expected
to drift east and then south over the southern Gulf coast later
this week.
Catchments across the Flood Watch area remain wet from rainfall
recorded over the past few weeks and in recent days.
Widespread areas of heavy rainfall with daily totals of 100 - 150
mm likely from late Wednesday and during Thursday and Friday, with
isolated 200 mm and higher rainfall possible each day.
Significant river, creek, and stream rises are likely with heavy
rainfall, with renewed minor to major flooding possible across
parts of the Flood Watch area. Elevated tides above Highest
Astronomical Tide (HAT) may worsen flooding in coastal areas
associated with the movement of the Tropical Low in the Gulf of
Carpentaria.
Many roads, and possibly primary and secondary highways may be
affected. Some communities and homesteads may become isolated.
Check road conditions before travelling.
Catchments likely to be affected include:
Settlement Creek
Nicholson River(Moderate flood warning is current)
Leichhardt River
Upper Flinders River
Lower Flinders River(Major flood warning is current)
Cloncurry River
Norman River
Gilbert River
