Issued at 11:00 am CST on Wednesday 24 February 2021 Flood Watch
Number: 5
FLOODING TO CONTINUE IN MANY PARTS OF NORTH WEST COASTAL RIVERS,
VICTORIA AND ROPER RIVERS
An active trough remains slow moving across the Top End.
Catchments across the Top End are saturated and many creeks,
streams and rivers are flowing strongly throughout. Rainfall totals
of 150 - 290 mm have been recorded in many parts of the flood watch
area during the past week on top of good wet season totals to
date.
Scattered rainfall totals of 20-50 mm are expected in the North
West Coastal Rivers during Wednesday with isolated falls to 100 mm
or more possible with slow-moving thunderstorms. Rainfall of 10-30
mm is expected elsewhere across the Carpentaria and Bonaparte
Coastal Rivers during Wednesday with isolated falls to 80 mm
possible across northern parts of the Carpentaria. On Thursday
heavier falls contract northwards with 20-40 mm expected across
northern parts of the North West Coastal Rivers and isolated falls
to 80 mm. Rainfall of 5-10 mm is likely across remaining areas with
isolated falls to 50 mm with thunderstorms. Heavy falls will
continue to ease and become more isolated from Friday.
Many rivers and streams have risen strongly in the past week and
many roads, including major highways, have been affected throughout
the flood watch area.
Further rainfall over the next few days is expected to contribute
to continued stream and river levels and further affect roads and
may isolate or some communities and homesteads.
