A cold front crossing Victoria will clear the State this evening, but an associated low pressure system will approach southwest Victoria. The low is expected to head southeastwards across Tasmania on Tuesday, reaching the Tasman Sea on Wednesday.

DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are expected over Alpine areas (above 1200 metres) of the Northeast district during the remainder of Monday and during Tuesday.

Winds are expected to ease by Wednesday morning.

Locations which may be affected include Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
* Keep clear of fallen power lines;
