Heavy rain and thunderstorms over eastern Victoria overnight.

A complex low pressure system southwest of Victoria will produce a band of rain and thunderstorms across eastern Victoria.

HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is expected to develop over the northeast district and parts of West and South Gippsland district during Thursday evening.

Widespread rainfall totals of 50 to 80mm are forecast with the potential for higher totals of 100 to 150mm over the northeast.

Rainfall totals of 30 to 50mm are forecast for parts of West and South Gippsland.

Rainfall is likely to be heaviest during the period between 8pm Thursday and 5am Friday then is expected to clear during Friday morning.

DAMAGING WINDS gusts of 90km/h are possible with thunderstorms, mainly over the northeast.

Locations which may be affected include Wodonga, Wangaratta, Morwell, Traralgon, Moe and Falls Creek.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
* Keep clear of fallen power lines;
* Don't walk, ride or drive through flood water;
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains;
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks;
* Be alert that in areas recently affected by fires, heavy rainfall increases the potential for landslides and debris across roads;
