Severe thunderstorms near Alice Springs this afternoon.

Weather Situation: An approaching upper low in combination with a surface trough and unstable conditions has generated severe thunderstorms across the south this afternoon. Severe storms are passing through Alice Springs in a line from the Tanami to the SA border and are moving east.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Alice Springs, Arltunga, Ti Tree, Santa Teresa, Titjikala and Simpson District east of Finke.

Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Lasseter district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.

Alice Springs recorded a 113 km/h wind gust at 4:03pm.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
* secure loose outside objects
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* avoid remaining in the open when storms threaten
* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
