Flood Watch Number: 18
MINOR TO MAJOR FLOODING OCCURRING ACROSS MULTIPLE CATCHMENTS IN
THE NORTH TROPICAL COAST, CENTRAL COAST, GULF COUNTRY, AND LAKE
EYRE BASIN
FURTHER FLOODING IS POSSIBLE IN PARTS OF THE GULF COUNTRY AND
WESTERN CAPE YORK PENINSULA CATCHMENTS OVER THE NEXT COUPLE
DAYS
The monsoon trough extends across the base of Cape York Peninsula.
The trough will weaken and contract into the northern Peninsula
from Wednesday. An embedded tropical low is currently situated over
northern Queensland, west of Ingham. This system will move eastward
towards the tropical east coast during Tuesday, then offshore
across the Coral Sea from Wednesday.
Catchments across the Flood Watch area are very wet from recent
rainfall and will respond quickly to further rainfall.
Moderate to localised heavy rainfall is expected to continue for
the next couple days, particularly in areas near the monsoon trough
and the tropical low.
River level rises and areas of flooding are possible across the
Flood Watch area. Elevated tides are also occurring which may
enhance flooding in coastal parts of the Flood Watch area.
Isolation of communities and disruption to transport routes are
possible over the next few days.
A Severe Weather Warning for heavy, locally intense rainfall is
current for the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and parts of North
Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper
Flinders and Central Coast and Whitsundays Forecast
Districts.
Catchments likely to be affected include:
Settlement Creek
Leichhardt River
Cloncurry River
Coleman and Edward Rivers
Mitchell River
Staaten River
Flood warnings are current for the following catchments: Norman
and Gilbert Rivers, Tully and Murray Rivers, Herbert River, Ross,
Bohle and Black Rivers and Bluewater Creek, Haughton River, Connors
and Isaac Rivers, Western and Diamantina Rivers, Nicholson and
Gregory Rivers, Flinders River, Thomson and Barcoo Rivers, and
Burdekin River.
