Flood Watch for parts of the Burdekin, parts of the Gulf Country, and Thomson River Catchments
Issued at 11:54 am EST on Thursday 6 February 2025

Flood Watch Number: 12

MINOR TO MAJOR FLOODING IS CURRENT ACROSS MULTIPLE CATCHMENTS IN THE NORTH TROPICAL AND CENTRAL COAST

FURTHER FLOODING IS POSSIBLE IN PARTS OF THE BURDEKIN, GULF COUNTRY AND THOMSON RIVER CATCHMENTS OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS

The monsoon trough extends across the base of Cape York Peninsula, and will linger across northern Queensland and enhance rainfall for several days.

Catchments across the North Tropical Coast and Central Coast areas are very wet due to recent heavy rainfall and will respond quickly to further rainfall. Gulf and Thomson River catchments are dry to moderately wet in some areas.

Isolated heavy rainfall with monsoonal rain areas and isolated thunderstorms is possible over northern Queensland and parts of central Queensland for several days.

River level rises and flooding are possible across the Flood Watch area. Elevated tides are also occurring which may enhance flooding in coastal parts of the Flood Watch area.

Isolation of communities and disruption to transport routes are possible over the next few days.

Catchments likely to be affected include:

Leichhardt River

Upper Flinders River

Lower Flinders River

Cloncurry River

Norman River

Belyando and Suttor Rivers to Burdekin Falls Dam

Cape River to Burdekin Falls Dam

Thomson River

Flood warnings are current for the following catchments: Gilbert River, Tully and Murray Rivers, Herbert River, Ross, Bohle and Black Rivers and Bluewater Creek, Haughton River, Don and Proserpine Rivers, Connors and Isaac Rivers, Barcoo River and parts of the Burdekin River.
