VIGOROUS COLD FRONT TO BRING WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WINDS TODAY, WITH LOCALLY DESTRUCTIVE WINDS POSSIBLE ABOUT THE NORTHEAST.

Weather Situation: A vigorous frontal system is moving east across Tasmania today resulting in widespread damaging winds, particularly with showers and thunderstorms, and some risk of localised destructive winds across the northeast of the state. Conditions are expected to gradually ease into this evening, but may persist about the northeast into early Saturday morning.

For NORTHEASTERN TASMANIA: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts around 110 km/h are likely today. DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS ABOVE 125 km/h are a small risk with shower and thunderstorm activity, including Scottsdale and Bridport, into this afternoon.

For the REMAINDER including HOBART and LAUNCESTON: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h are likely, easing tonight.

For elevated and exposed areas, DAMAGING WINDS may average 70 to 80 km/h with peak gusts around 120 km/h.

Winds across the state are expected to ease below warning thresholds early Saturday morning.

Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, Launceston, St Helens, Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk, Hobart, Currie, Smithton, Oatlands and Scottsdale.
