Issued at 12:02 pm WST on Sunday 13 April 2025
Headline:
Tropical Cyclone expected to develop north of the Kimberley early
in the week.
Areas Affected:
Warning Zone
Kalumburu to Kuri Bay, not including Kuri Bay.
Watch Zone
None.
Cancelled Zone
None.
Details of Tropical Low 29U at 11:00 am AWST:
Intensity: Tropical Low, sustained winds near the centre of 45
kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 85 kilometres per
hour.
Location: within 55 kilometres of 12.6 degrees South 125.5 degrees
East, estimated to be 225 kilometres north northwest of Kalumburu
and 340 kilometres north northeast of Kuri Bay.
Movement: southwest at 10 kilometres per hour.
Tropical Low 29U is located to the northwest of Kalumburu and is
moving slowly southwest. During Sunday it is expected to slowly
strengthen and start moving faster to the west-southwest, while
remaining offshore from the Kimberley coast. There is a small risk
it moves further south bringing it closer to the coast.
On Monday, it is likely to reach tropical cyclone strength late in
the day and be taking a more westerly track, taking it away from
the Kimberley coast. Increased rain, wind and wave impacts are
expected along the northwest Kimberley coast during today and on
Monday, possibly continuing into early Tuesday if the system takes
a more southward track than forecast.
Hazards:
Gales with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS could develop along the coast
between Kalumburu and Mitchell Plateau this afternoon, and then
extend west to Kuri Bay later this evening if 29U takes a more
southerly track closer to the coast.
HEAVY RAINFALL is possible along coastal areas between Kalumburu
and Kuri Bay during today and on Monday.
As the system moves past, tides between Kalumburu and Kuri Bay may
rise above the normal high tide mark, but the sea level should not
exceed the highest tide of the year.
