For people in parts of Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory, South Coast and South West Slopes Forecast Districts.

Damaging winds spreading over alpine areas and high terrain in the southeast overnight and Friday, with locally destructive wind gusts possible over high terrain.

Weather Situation: A vigorous cold front over central western NSW will progress eastwards across the state overnight and Friday morning, clearing Friday evening. Northwesterly winds will strengthen significantly ahead of this system.

Strong winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS around 90 km/h are possible for elevated parts of the Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory and Southern Tablelands during early Friday morning.

DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h are likely for parts of the Snowy Mountains above 1300 m during this evening and early Friday morning. A period of DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS reaching 130 km/h is possible over these areas in the early hours of Friday morning.

DAMAGING WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h with peak gusts around 130 km/h are likely over alpine areas above 1900 m overnight and early Friday morning.

Winds are forecast to ease below warning thresholds by early Friday afternoon.

Locations which may be affected include Jindabyne, Perisher Valley, Charlotte Pass, Thredbo, Bredbo and Adaminaby.

146 km/h wind gust was recorded at Thredbo at 8:40 pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
